I spent the last few days of my trip in Thailand in a small town called Chiang Dao, which is where my sister and her husband are living. This is a photo of their traditional-style Thai house:

sister's house

We were there for Christmas day, which felt a bit strange because people in Thailand don't pay any attention to Christmas.

Since we didn't have any traditional Christmas food or decorations, we decided to invent our own Thai-style Christmas.

We bought a lot of fruit at the local market, and ate it with pancakes at my sister's house as our Christmas lunch. My mother found some decorations in the market to hang up.

We also bought a huge lantern-balloon at the market, which was probably left over from the recent Islamic festival. In the evening we lit it and let it drift into the sky to end our Christmas day. (You can see a photo of the lantern at the start of this entry.)

The day after Christmas we drove into the mountains near Chiang Dao and visited a village of a local hill tribe. We saw a lot of water buffalo along the way.

At the hill tribe village, my mother and sister bought some of the local people's handcrafted goods.

There were chickens, pigs and dogs running around everywhere. I took a few photos of the dogs, because I thought they looked a little bit similar to the style of dog that is seen in Japan a lot. Maybe they're related?

In the evening, we bathed in the local natural hot springs, which were outdoors by the river, and free for everyone to use. (Sorry, I couldn't get a very good photo!)

Now, I'm finally back in Melbourne, after a long bus ride from Chiang Dao to Bangkok yesterday, and a flight back to Melbourne today. I had a great time in Thailand, but I'm a little exhausted from all the travelling. I think I need another holiday to recover!

I'll write my next entry after the New Year starts, so I hope in the meantime you all have a great New Year's Eve!

My mother and my sister and I spent a couple of days before Christmas in Chiang Mai, a city in northern Thailand. It’s a beautiful old city, with lots of temples and markets. It's close to the mountains, and a bit cooler than southern Thailand.

The picture above is from a temple called Doi Suthep. It seems like the Thai really like gold; it's all over the temples and the Buddha statues.

It turns out that we were in Chiang Mai right at the end of a Muslim festival, and there were lots of lanterns hanging up. (You can see in the background of my photo that they've hung some lanterns in the shape of a Christmas tree.)

There are also lots of markets in Chiang Mai, and me and my family did a lot of shopping there. Most of it wasn't very interesting to me, although I did buy some lights from a very pretty looking stall:

At one of the local markets I also met Takeshi, a Japanese musician who was performing and selling his album in the middle of the market. I was very surprised to hear someone singing in Japanese in the middle of a Thai market!

I also saw some traditional Thai dancing being performed at one of the markets. Thai dance seems to be very focused on graceful arm movements. It was very peaceful to watch.

For my next entry, I'll be writing about Christmas day with my family in Chiang Dao, a small town in northern Thailand. It was pretty different to my normal Australian Christmas!

This week we travelled from the jungle to a beach resort called Railay Beach, where we finally met up with my sister. Because of the high mountains surrounding the beach, you can only get there by boat. We had to wade out into the water to load our luggage onto the boat.

Railay Beach is a popular tourist destination, and it’s very beautiful. I don’t usually go to resort areas, but it was nice to relax for a little while. The hotel we stayed at was right near the mountains, and was very picturesque.

Although most people seem to sunbathe and swim at Railay Beach, you can also go snorkeling or rock climbing. I took this photo of some people having rock climbing lessons.

I saw a whole family of monkeys near the resort - there were about eight of them! I tried to take some photos, but they were moving too quickly to get a good one. This is the best shot I got:

We leave today to go to Chaing Mai, a city in the north of Thailand, near where my sister lives. I’ve enjoyed being at a beach resort for a while, but it will be good to see more of the real Thailand soon.

Last Thursday we caught a plane from Bangkok to a town called Surat Thani, in the south of Thailand. From there we caught a bus to a remote area called Khao Sok.

The area we’re in is in the middle of the jungle, at a small place called ‘Our Jungle House’, run by a German named Klaus. We’re been staying in a small hut on raised stilts, and there are mosquito nets on the beds, to stop the mosquitoes.

I was really surprised by how noisy the jungle is. When I tried to go to sleep I was surrounded by the noise of crickets in the jungle, frogs in the river, and lizards in our roof. I didn’t get much sleep on our first night here! Here’s a photo of a frog I found living in our roof:

I've been eating some great Thai food at the local restaurants. Here's a green curry that I had yesterday:

My mother and I went for a walk around the area and saw a wild elephant eating. I took a few photos but I was careful not to get too close.

On the weekend a local guide took us out onto a lake near Khao Sok. The lake was surrounded by limestone cliffs and jungle - it looked amazing! We stayed on the lake in some small bamboo huts, and went kayaking and swimming.

My mum and I had a long day of sightseeing in Bangkok on Wednesday. We caught more boat taxis, as well as some tuk-tuks. Tuk-tuks are motorbikes which have been modified to carry passengers. Here’s a photo of one from behind.

tuk-tuk

We went shopping, and I bought some shorts and a shirt from street vendors. The king of Thailand is having his 60th birthday this year, and so lots of people are selling pink and yellow T-shirts. (Pink and yellow are the King’s royal colours).

While I was out shopping, I also bought a sweet banana crepe made by a guy at a small street stall.

After shopping we went back to the hotel for a buffet lunch. Of course I wanted to try a little bit of everything, so I ended up eating too much!

Anyway, I’m writing this all from the jungle in the south of Thailand, which I arrived in yesterday. It’s very beautiful, and much more peaceful than Bangkok. I’ll write more about it at the start of next week...

I'm writing this entry from Thailand, where I'll be travelling for the next couple of weeks. I'm here with my mum. We're going to do some sightseeing and relaxing, and then meet up with my sister. My sister Willow is living and working here with her husband for a year.

After a bumpy, nine-hour flight we finally arrived at Bangkok airport on Monday night. We were exhausted, but be somehow managed to bargain for a taxi to get to our hotel.

Yesterday we explored some local parts of Bangkok. We caught a boat taxi down a canal, which was much more fun than travelling by taxi or bus. Here's a photo of a boat taxi taken from my hotel:

We did a little bit of shopping. Things are very cheap here, but personally I'm not very interested in shopping.

My main photo above is of a traditional Thai theatre group we found near the hotel. They were practicing for a performance, so I took a few photos.

This is a photo of my mum with lots and lots of pinapples, which were being sold by the basket:

This is a typical Bangkok highway, in the shopping district:

We're in Bangkok for another day, and then tomorrow we catch a flight into the jungle in southern Thailand. It should be exciting!

One of my favourite streets in Melbourne is Canning Street. I used to live here many years ago, back in the late 90s. It's a wide street, with a line of trees down the middle.

Canning Street runs through a popular suburb called Carlton, and it's close to lots of great restaurants and shops, including Brunswick Street (which I mentioned in this previous entry: http://www.c-player.com/ac55665/thread/1100052373086)

It's mostly closed off to outside traffic, so it's very quiet, and it's a popular street for bike riding and dog walking.

These days it's too expensive for me to live here, but maybe I'll move back here eventually when I'm earning more money.

----------------

By the way, this Sunday I leave for a holiday in Thailand. I'm going there with my mum, to visit my sister and her husband for Christmas.

I'm going to keep updating Under the Shade while I'm there, but I'm not sure how easy internet access will be, so my updates might be less frequent.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to travelling in Thailand. If anyone has any tips for good places to go, let me know!

On Sunday I had lunch at a cafe with a few friends. We went to a cafe in a suburb called South Yarra, where there are lots of expensive shops and restaurants.

My friends Miles and Lou brought their daughter Iris along to the cafe. Iris is about 15 months old. She's very cute and has a friendly personality.

Miles and Lou bought Iris a 'babychino' to drink. A babychino is just steamed milk (with froth) in a coffee cup, made so that it looks like a cappuccino coffee. It's made for toddlers so that they can pretend they're having coffee with the adults.
