On the weekend, in between going to election parties, I went to see my friend's band play at a bar on Brunswick Street. The bar is called Bar Open, and it often has bands playing there for free.
My friend's band is called The Hoodangers, and they play original songs that are a mixture of old-style jazz, rock and reggae. Their music is very energetic, and lots of people dance at their gigs.
My friend Ollie is the guy playing the drums. He's a really good drummer, but he's also an excellent singer and guitar player. He also plays in a band called Art of Fighting (which I talked about in this entry: http://www.c-player.com/ac55665/thread/1100047853808).

On Saturday Australia had a national election. It was a big deal because the current government had been in power for about 11 years, and it finally seemed like they might lose this time.
Australia has two main political parties. There is the Liberal Party, who are the right-wing party. They believe that making the economy run well is the best way of helping all Australians.
Then there is the Labor Party, who are more left-wing that the Liberals. They believe that the best way to help Australians is to spend more on public healthcare, education and welfare.
The Liberal Government has been in power for about 11 years, but they have been becoming more and more unpopular lately. Lots of my friends were pretty excited because Labor might win the election - I was invited to five different election parties that night!
Anyway, Labor easily won the election, which I was happy about. This is our new Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd:

Last Sunday, while I was in the country (see my previous entry), my friend and I visited a country market.
I expected just a small market, but it was quite large. There were lots of people from nearby towns, selling things that they made or grew such as fruit and vegetables, plants, nuts, jam, soap, and even animals.
I saw chickens, pigs, and even peacocks for sale. It was a little bit depressing to see the animals being moved around in really small cages.

On the weekend I visited my friend's new house in the country. It's a church in a small country town that has been converted into a house.
The church was originally built during the 19th century, when the town was full of gold miners. These days the town is pretty quiet.
Even though the church has been converted into a house, it still has a lot of its original features. It even has huge old-style keys to open the doors.

It was very peaceful staying in the country town. It was nice to get away from the city for a while!

I saw this bird in a park near my house last week. It had really striking colours, and I managed to get quite close before it flew away.
I wasn't sure what it was called, so I had to look it up online at 'Birds in Backyards', a useful site about Australian birds:
http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/
It turns out it was a Rainbow Lorikeet. I think these are the birds that often make huge flocks in trees near my house at dusk. When you walk past the trees they're in, the noise is incredible.
This is a sample of what the Rainbow Lorikeets sound like. The part at the end is what they sound like when there's a large flock of them all calling at once:

It was my birthday last week, so to celebrate I invited my friends to drinks on Saturday night in a bar called Phoenix.
Unfortunately the same day was the last day of the Spring racing carnival, so the bar was full of people who had been drinking at the races all day.
This meant my friends were spread out throughout the bar, and I had to keep moving around to talk to everyone.
My friend knew about someone else's party that was on that night, so when it got later we headed off to there. I didn't know the person whose party it was, but that didn't matter. I didn't get home until about 6 am, which is pretty late for me!

Last Tuesday was Melbourne Cup Day. The Melbourne Cup is a famous horse race that happens every year, on the first Tuesday of November. It's a big deal in Melbourne - it's even a public holiday here!
Even if people don't normally bet on horseracing, most people in Melbourne put a bet on a horse for the Melbourne Cup. Parents even place bets for their children, which is technically illegal.
The Melbourne Cup is a big day for fashion. People like to dress up for the race, and it's fashionable for women to wear an elaborate or outlandish hat. Some of the hats are pretty amazing!
I don't have any photos of my own (because I didn't go to the race), but this link will take you to some Melbourne Cup fashion photos from a Melbourne newspaper:

Last week daylight saving started in Melbourne. This is a period over summer when everyone turns the clocks forward one hour.
Everyone seems to complain about losing an hour of sleep when we have to do this, but daylight saving is pretty good. It means that we have an extra hour of sunlight in the evening, so we can do things outside after work.
Daylight saving happens in the US and UK too, but the strange thing about daylight saving in Australia is that there are parts of Australia where it doesn't happen. The northern part of Australia doesn't use daylight savings, because the farmers there don't like the idea of working later in the day (when it's sunny) while their non-farmer friends have already finished work.

One of the things I love about Melbourne is that there's so many parks and gardens around. The photo above is of a place just near my dad's house. It's not far from the centre of Melbourne, but it looks like the countryside.
The place in the photo is called a billabong in Australia, meaning a stagnant pool of water attached to a river. The name comes from an Aboriginal word. For some reason billabongs are mentioned in a lot of Australian folk songs.
I've been taking Jasper (my dad's dog - see my previous entry) for walks around this park every day. It's been great staying so near to such great parkland. I'll have to find some good parks near my house too...
