We had a few days without rain in Tokyo last week, and I've been exploring the suburb where I'm staying. It's a pretty cool area called Kyodo, and there are lots of little old shops and restaurants here.
Of course, I don't know many areas of Tokyo very well, so I don't know how different this suburb is, but it seems like a really nice area to me.
The other day I met Tomo-kun, the turtle in the photograph. His owner runs a shop near the house where I'm staying, and he told me the turtle is 26 years old. I was surprised how friendly Tomo-kun was; he kept trying to climb onto me.
For me, this is what's interesting about visiting a foreign city: meeting local people and seeing how they live, rather than visiting museums or going sight-seeing.

I love Japanese food. When I was young, my mother used a lot of Japanese ingredients to cook our meals, such as soba, tofu, shoyu and miso, so I've always been familiar with Japanese flavors.
When I was living in Japan for a couple of years, I tried to eat as many different kinds of Japanese food as I could. The only food I couldn't get used to was natto, and I tried to eat it a few times.
Since I've been back in Australia I've become completely vegetarian. I don't eat any meat or fish at all. Unfortunately that's made it hard for me to eat in a lot of Japanese restaurants - there's meat or fish in almost everything!
In most restaurants the staff were very understanding about my vegetarianism. They usually do their best to make some vegetarian meals for me.
Still, it's a pity that I'm missing out on so much good Japanese food!

On the weekend a reader called Pin wrote to me about the summer festivals in Tokyo. Coincidentally, I went to a festival on Sunday night, in the area where I'm staying. I missed the parade, but there were still lots of street vendors selling interesting foods, and games (like where you try to catch fish with a paper net).
I like seeing these kind of festivals in Japan, because they have a very traditional feel. Because Australia is such a young nation, our festivals don't seem very traditional, which isn't as interesting to me.
Pin also mentioned the Yokohama bay fireworks festival, which happens on the 1st of August. I'd like to go, since firework shows in Japan are always impressive. Since I'll be flying home early the next morning, I'm not sure I'll have time. Maybe next year!

I've been in Tokyo for almost a week, but most of that time I've spent working. That's the problem with being freelance, it can be hard to take a proper holiday.
Since I've been here, there have been two earthquakes and a typhoon. I remember there was a big earthquake in Nigata about a year or so ago, so it must be tough for the people living there to have another big earthquake so soon afterwards.
It's strange for me, since in Australia bush fires are about the only natural disaster that people die in. There are no earthquakes, and there are only cyclones on the far northern coast of Australia. Japan seems like a dangerous place compared to Australia!
P.S. Thank you to yamako, who recommended a restaurant named 黒茶屋 in Musashi-itsukaichi. If I get the time, I'll definitely check it out!

Well, last week I was freezing in the cold Melbourne winter, and now I'm in humid, east-Asian weather, in the middle of the rainy season.
That's right, I'm in Tokyo.
I flew here via Kuala Lumpur at the end of last week. It's a long flight when you go via Malaysia (about 16 hours!) but it was cheaper than flying direct to Tokyo.
It's been about a year and a half since I was living in Tokyo, and it feels very strange to be back. This city feels both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. Even though I only lived here for about three years, Tokyo feels like a second home to me.
Anyway, I'll be staying here for about three weeks, visiting clients and friends. I'm looking forward to writing about Japan while I'm here. If any of you have advice about good places to visit while I'm in Tokyo, let me know!

Last week, I wrote about how I've been working near Brunswick Street. I've been walking around the area, and I've noticed a lot of cool graffiti.
As in other countries, graffiti is normally illegal, but some of the graffiti I've seen is on the sides of shops in very public areas, so it's possible that these shops asked the artists to do the graffiti.
Of course, there's plenty of illegal graffiti in the laneways and alleys around Brunswick Street. If you take a look down just about any alley, there will be some interesting graffiti there.
Apart from the artistic graffiti, there are also political, social, or satirical messages that people write. This writing is also called graffiti, which is confusing.
The photo above shows some graffiti in an alley near Brunswick Street.

Thanks to yamako and Pin, who wrote interesting comments about my last entry.
yamako mentioned that all her local shops close at 9 pm. yamako, I'm sorry to hear everything closes so early in your area! Near my house, most restaurants and cafes would close around 10:30 pm, but there are pubs that stay open until around 1 am.
Pin mentioned noticing some Japanese cars in the picture in my last entry. I don't know much about cars, but I'm sure you're right, Pin. There are certainly a lot of Japanese cars in Australia, probably because they have a reputation for being inexpensive, well-made and fuel-efficient.
Honda, Mitsubishi, and Mazda (the English name for マツダ株式会社) are all common car brands that you can see everywhere in Melbourne.
