Recently I've been working at the Melbourne International Film Festival. I've been writing some of the material for their programme guide.

It's a good place to work. The people are friendly and professional, even when they are under deadline pressure.

This week we have had a big deadline for finishing the festival's programme guide, and I noticed that the people in this office seem to be good at being relaxed, even though they are very stressed.

I think this might be an Australian characteristic in the workplace. People like to seem relaxed and casual, even though they are working very hard. Of course, every workplace has a different kind of personality, so it's hard to generalise.

The photo above is of the publications section of the film festival office, where I work with the editor and graphic designer.

By the way, minieluv wrote an interesting reply to my entry about Australian houses being cold. Thanks for that!

It's true that lots of Australians still wear T-shirts and thin clothes even when the weather is chilly. In fact, I'm one of them...

Firstly, I want to thank Pin and minieluv for their comments on my last entry. It's great to read your replies!

Pin asked an interesting question about the photo at my dinner party. Since it's the middle of winter in Australia, Pin wanted to know why people were wearing T-shirts in my photo.

Well, in the last few weeks it has been extremely cold, but my sister's house has central heating, which warms the house up pretty well. So it wasn't too cold at the dinner party.

However, I think that Melbourne people are also used to living in cold temperatures. A lot of Melbourne houses (but not all of them) don't have very good insulation, so they're quite cold in winter.

Some visitors to Australia complain about how cold Australian houses are. I'm not sure why Australian houses are like this, but it seems to be accepted as normal here.

PS. I also want to say thank you to a reader named 'ku', who wrote me a message about visiting Australia recently. Thanks for the message ku, it's great to hear that you had a good time in Australia!

Thanks for your responses to my last entry, そらのすけ and minieluv. I really like getting feedback from you guys! I guess this kind of busy weekend isn't uncommon in Japan after all.

Anyway, I got my sister to send me a photo of the dinner party that I went to last weekend. It was just a small dinner with my two sisters and their husbands.

We wanted to have dinner together because my sister and her husband are leaving Australia next month, to work in Thailand for a year. I'm thinking about going to visit them at Christmas time. I've never been to Thailand, and I'd be interested to see it.

I had a busy weekend. I went to a birthday party, a dinner party, a picnic, had breakfast with some friends, met some other friends for a drink, moved some furniture, and even did some work. (Unfortunately I kept forgetting to take my camera, so I don't have any photos for you.)

I feel like I need another weekend, just to recover...

I was talking to a Japanese friend, and she was surprised that I would go to two or more social events in one day. For example, on Saturday, I had breakfast with a friend, went to a picnic, and then went for drinks with some friends.

That's a busy day for me, but not unusual. My Japanese friend thought it sounded ridiculously busy. Is it unusual in Japan to go to a few different social events in one day? I'd like to hear what you think!

This is a photo of some farmland outside Melbourne. I took the photo about a month ago, when I was visiting country towns for one of my projects.

I thought some of you might be interested in how rural Australia looks. Of course, this kind of farmland only exists in some parts of Australia.

Although Australia is very big, only a few parts of it have good farmland, mainly the south and east coasts. That's why most of the people in Australia live in these areas. Most of central, north and west Australia is desert.

Over the last couple of years there has been a drought in the area around Melbourne, so it's been a difficult time for the farmers. Recently we've had a lot of rain, so hopefully the drought is over.

--+----------+----

By the way, thank you to 'minieluv' for another nice message. minieluv lived in Sydney for seven years, and said that Australians were "nice and kind"... that's very nice to hear!

If you've read my earlier entries, you might already know that Australians think of themselves as being good at supporting each other in difficult situations.

Another important part of the Australian mentality is the idea of supporting the underdog. The underdog is the person or group who in a particular situation is unlikely to win.

For example, in a football game, the underdogs are the team that people think probably won't win.

Australians like to support underdogs, because they feel like the underdogs need the support more than the people who are likely to win. I think Australians naturally identify with people who are fighting against the odds.

Because of this, when there are elections in Australia, politicians often talk about how their opponents are more likely to win, because they want to look like the underdog!

Firstly, I want to say thanks to 'minieluv', who wrote to me with a theory about why Tokyo cats are shy. I suppose it's impossible to know why Tokyo cats seem different, but I liked reading your explanation.

Right now I'm at a friend's housewarming party. My friend Alex just moved into a new house, and he's having a party to celebrate.

It's a pretty small party - Alex just invited a few close friends, so there are only about twenty people here. But most people here know each other well, so it's a good chance to catch up with each other.

Anyway, I should go back to the party. I hope you all have a good weekend!

I met this friendly cat on the street the other day, while I was walking to work. I think he's a Burmese cat, but I'm not sure.

As you might already know, I like cats a lot. I usually walk to work (when I'm not working from home), and I like to stop along the way and pat any cats that I meet.

When I was living in Tokyo, I noticed that the cats there behave very differently to the cats in Melbourne. In Tokyo, most cats I saw would run away as soon as I approached them. In Melbourne, many of the cats really like attention, and they'll meow at you so that you'll stop and pat them.

So, why are Tokyo cats scared of me? If you have a theory, write to me and let me know what you think!
