One of my readers asked me about where my name, Rani, comes from.

The short answer is that my parents made it up.

The long answer is that my parents were expecting me to be a girl, and they had the name 'Rani' ready. When I turned out to be a boy, they didn't think they could call me Rani, but a friend of theirs said that Rani is a Danish boys name.

He was wrong.

When I was about a year old, my parents found out that Rani is actually a common Indian girls name, and that it means 'queen' or 'princess' in Indian.

Someone has also told me that Rani is a Hebrew girls name.

So basically I have a very unusual girls name. But I like it... and I'm almost certain that there are no other guys out there with the same name!

When I was young, my parents were hippies. They gave me a strange name, Rani, and they also raised me as a vegetarian.

There wasn't much good vegetarian food around in Melbourne when I was young, but these days there's plenty. Every restaurant has some vegetarian meals, and there are some great restaurants that serve only vegetarian food.

There's a great restaurant near my house called 'The White Lotus' that serves only vegan food, meaning that they don't use animal products, like milk, eggs, and honey.

The interesting thing about the White Lotus restaurant is that they serve a lot of fake meat dishes. You can order duck, fish, and beef dishes that look and almost taste like real meat, but they're completely vegan. (The meal in the photo above is fake Mongolian 'beef'.)

The most impressive thing is their fish dishes. They use layered tofu and seaweed to create just the right fleshy texture for the fake fish meat.

Melbourne probably has the best music scene in Australia. There are lots of little pubs and halls where you can see live music, and there are a lot of local bands.

I really love going to see live music, but I don't do it as much as I used to. I'm just too busy these days, which is a pity.

Some famous Melbourne musicians include Nick Cave and Jet. Kylie Minogue also comes from Melbourne, but she was never part of the Melbourne music scene.

My best friends are in a band called Art of Fighting. They just released their third album, which is pretty exciting for them. If you want to hear what their music is like, one of their videos is on YouTube here:

They're heading to Japan soon to play some shows, and I'm a bit jealous. I'm feeling a bit nostalgic for Tokyo at the moment. Oh well, hopefully I'll get to come and visit soon...

In the last two weeks I've been travelling to some towns outside of Melbourne for my work.

This week I visited Ballarat, a town that became large and wealthy when gold was found nearby in the 1850s. (A lot of people from Europe and Asia emigrated to Australia during the 'gold rush' that happened at that time.) The town still has a lot of the old buildings from the gold rush era.

Ballarat is also famous because something called the 'Eureka rebellion' happened here, where some miners fought against the police.

Even though the miners lost the battle, the Eureka rebellion is seen as an important symbol of Australians being willing to fight against injustice.

Australians have some strange habits when it comes to language. One of these habits is sometimes changing people's names slightly, as a sign of close friendship. Doing this feels more casual and friendly to some Australians.

People's names are usually shortened as much as possible, so that Peter becomes Pete, or Kimberly becomes Kim.

Also, an 'o' or 'za' sound is sometimes added to a name. For example:
Dave --> Davo
Steve --> Stevo
Darren --> Daz / Dazza
Sharon --> Shaz / Shazza

Many other nouns are often shortened in very casual Australian speech:
MacDonald's --> Maccas
present --> pressie
barbeque --> barby
service station --> servo
7-11 --> seves

So remember, if an Australian shorten your name, or changes it slightly, it's probably a sign of friendship, not carelessness!

Like most modern cities, there are lots of different architectural styles in Melbourne. One of the distinctive Melbourne styles is called the terrace house.

Terrace houses are a row of houses of the same design that sit right next to each other, so that they share side walls. They look skinny from the front, but they extend back a long way.

Melbourne terrace houses usually have cast iron balconies, and have a facade at the top. (In the photo above, it looks like there's a rooftop balcony, but it's just a decorative wall in front of the roof.)

In Melbourne, building terrace houses was popular in the years 1850 - 1890. Melbourne is only about 200 years old, so the terrace houses are some of the oldest buildings in the city.

I really like terrace houses, and I've lived in a couple in the past. The only problem is that some rooms don't get much sunlight, because there aren't any side windows.

At the moment it's the Easter weekend - a four-day holiday from Friday to Monday.

For Christians, Easter is the most important time of the year. For them Easter is about remembering when Jesus was killed, and then came back to life three days later.

For non-Christians, like myself, Easter is just about having a long weekend and eating some special Easter foods.

It's traditional to eat hot cross buns (shown in the picture above) on Easter Friday. These are delicious fruit buns that have a white cross on top (which represents the cross that Jesus died on).

On Easter Sunday, people give each other Easter eggs - eggs made out of chocolate. Children wake up to find Easter eggs which have been left by the Easter bunny, who is a bit like Father Christmas, except that he's a rabbit and he comes at Easter.

Hi everyone!

Recently an Australian reader called Naomi wrote to me. I was surprised to have an Australian write to me, because I thought most people reading my blog would be Japanese.

Naomi asked about what work I do. I'm a freelance writer and editor. I usually work on short projects for companies.

A lot of my work is educational writing, but sometimes I also write computer game designs. Right now I'm working on a computer game for a company in Sydney. Sometimes I also write film reviews or do interviews for magazines.

Sometimes I do proofreading. Recently I proofread a children's Japanese textbook.

It can be tough being a freelancer. There usually seems to be either too much work, or not enough. It's hard to find a balance.

Sometimes it can be a little bit lonely, but I really enjoy working for myself.
