I felt like writing a little bit more about Australian culture, so I'm going to write a bit about mateship.
Mateship is an important idea in Australian culture, and it helps explain the way Australians sometimes think about things.
The idea of mateship is about a bond of friendship, which is seen as a very important relationship in Australian culture.
Mateship is about the feeling that you should support your friends, and that they'll support you. The idea is that mates are always there to help each other. Mateship is also about forgiving your friends for their mistakes and misbehaviour.
In the Australian idea of mateship, these feelings don't just apply to your actual friends, but also to other people that you meet.
Because of these feelings of mateship, many Australians feel uncomfortable if they have to say that someone did something wrong. In school, kids who tell the teachers that someone did something wrong are called "dobbers". Being a "dobber" is very bad in Australian culture, because dobbers have gone against the idea of mateship.
It's hard to describe cultural ideas like this one, but I hope you found this interesting. If you have any questions about Australian culture, just let me know. I'm happy to answer them!

I discovered a new cafe in my local area a few weeks ago. It's called 'Fandango', and I've been going there at least a couple of times a week. Sometimes I take my laptop there and work.
Fandango was started about three months ago by Beth and Anthony, shown in my photo above. They're really enthusiastic and friendly, and they create a great atmosphere for the cafe. It also helps that their food is really good, and that Anthony makes excellent coffees.
I've had some interesting talks to Anthony and Beth about the challenges of starting a new business. They've both been working in cafes for a long time, but this is the first time they've started their own.

Here's a couple more photos from last weekend, when I stayed at my friend's country house.
In the photo on the left are the two cats that live at the country house, Oscar (in front) and Oliver. The family also had two dogs, but unfortunately they died a couple of weeks ago when they both attacked a venomous snake.
In the photo on the right are a couple of rosellas (a common type of Australia parrot), taking a bath just outside the house. At dusk, I sometimes see huge flocks of 10 - 20 rosellas in the trees near my house. They're easy to find, because at dusk they make a lot of noise!

Last week I stayed at this house, located in the countryside outside Melbourne. It's the family home of a friend of mine, and it was a great place to just relax and unwind, surrounded by nature.
This area was full of Australian wildlife. I saw big flocks of Australian parrots (but it was hard to get a good photo!). There were also plenty of farm animals, such as sheep and cows.
The family who live here are interesting because they chose to "home-school" their children, meaning that they taught their children themselves instead of sending them to school. I've never met any home-schooled people before, so I had a lot of questions to ask.
I've got some more pictures to post of my weekend, but I'll post them in my next entry.

I stayed at my friend's place while I was in Sydney. She had a great house right near the harbour.
She also had two little Chihauhaus, named Chevy and Stella. (That's Chevy in the photo.) Chiahauhaus aren't very common in Australia - I think most people here prefer bigger dogs.
I'm not really a "dog person"; I like dogs, but I prefer cats. Still, Chevy and Stella were pretty cute.

Last week I went to Sydney on a business trip. The trip was very fast - I flew up on the Sunday evening, went to a meeting on Monday, and flew home that evening.
The photo above was taken from the window of my taxi on the way to the airport, because I hardly had time to see Sydney at all! In the picture you can see Sydney Tower, which has two revolving restaurant in it, so that you can eat lunch with a great view of Sydney. I've never been up there, but maybe I will on my next visit.
What I did see of Sydney looked pretty good. As the plane was landing I got a great view of the Sydney harbour, which looked amazing in the evening light. The area around Sydney looked very green compared to Melbourne. (Melbourne is having problems with water shortage at the moment, because there hasn't been enough rain.)
