[14] Cafe Latte Land

Melbourne is heating up. The long, cool, sunny days of spring are becoming warmer. It's won't be long until December arrives, and the days become scorching hot.

But for the moment I'm enjoying spring, which is my favourite season in Melbourne. It's perfect weather for sitting outside a cafe, sipping a hot cafe latte and watching the world go by.

Melbourne is cafe town. People here love going to cafes to relax and drink a coffee or two. But they almost always drink it hot - even in the middle of summer. There aren't many chain-store cafes (like Starbucks or Doutor), because most people like to go to a small, local cafe that has its own style.

The pictures above are of my favourite local cafe, called ‘The Hot Poppy’. It has a friendly, casual atmosphere, good coffee, and great food. I often come here for breakfast on the weekend.

[12] To Market, to Market

I like to cook at home; it's healthy and cheap, and I find cooking relaxing (when I'm not too tired). To cook good meals you need good ingredients, and I'm lucky because from my house it's only a 10-minute walk to one of the best places to buy food in Melbourne - the Victoria Market.

The Victoria Market is a huge collection of stalls and shops, selling everything from vegetables to clothes to souvenirs. It really is big - the whole market fills an entire city block. It's a great source of cheap, quality food. I go there every week to stock up on fruit and vegetables.

An indoor section of the market has shops that sell an amazing selection of meats, fish, cheeses, dips, bread, and other foods from all over the world. The picture above shows just one of 17 delicatessen stores. There are also specialty shops for things like coffee, pasta, cakes and wine.

I always end up buying more than I intended to, but I never regret having a fridge full of great food at the end of the day.

[9] Working Like a Dog (and Spending Time with the Cat)

Wow, things have been really busy for me over the last couple of weeks. It's been a while since my last entry!

I work from home (as a writer and editor) which is good because when I get out of bed, I'm already at my workplace... but it's also bad, because when the day ends, I'm still at my workplace. It can be difficult to separate work time from leisure time, especially on the weekends.

Another good side of working at home is that I get to spend a lot of time with my cat, Jest. That's him in the photo. His name means "to joke". He's about two years old, and he's very jumpy. Even very soft noises will startle him.
