■Australian Word of the Week（今週のオーストラリア英語）jumperとsweater
オーストラリアではジャンパーと言いますが（日本と一緒ですね）、アメリカ英語では“sweater（スウェター）”と言います。上着のことです。

■Australian Spelling
If you’re used to US English, you might notice a few differences in spelling to Australian English. Australian English is much more similar to British English in spelling.
オーストラリア英語とアメリカ英語では、同じ言葉でもスペルが異なるものがいくつかあります。オーストラリアはどちらかというとイギリス英語のスペルに近いですね。

例）favourite　（オーストラリア）
　　favorite 　（アメリカ）

A Melbourne Love Song

Welcome to the first entry in ‘Under the Shade’, a blog about Australia, and more particularly about my life in Melbourne.

Since this is my first blog entry, I should tell you a little more about the place I live in - Melbourne. It’s a big city, the second biggest in Australia, with a population of over three million. Okay, it’s not that big compared to many Japanese cities, but it’s a lot more spread out. For example, Tokyo has over 5,656 people for each square kilometre, while Melbourne has about 480 people per square kilometre.

Melbourne is a city with a lot of parks, and a lot of trees. Despite what many people outside Australia seem to believe, there aren’t kangaroos in Melbourne, but there are lots of other Australian animals. In the parks and gardens, you can often see brightly coloured birds such as rosellas and honeyeaters, and at night there are lots of possums and bats.

The other thing that Melbourne is famous for is crazy weather. People say Melbourne has "four seasons in one day". It's common for a day to start out sunny, then to suddenly rain for a couple of hours, and then become sunny again. The weather here is almost impossible to predict, and people often carry jumpers (the Australian word for 'sweater') just in case the weather becomes cold.

I was born in Melbourne, and I've spent most of my life here. I've travelled to many other cities around the world, and even lived overseas for a few years in Tokyo, and Melbourne is still one of my favourite places.

I'm sure I'll travel and live overseas again, but I'll always come back to Melbourne.

I’m a writer, an editor, and an enthusiastic traveler.

I live in Melbourne, Australia, where I was born. I recently lived for two years in Tokyo, and I still return there regularly.
