Well, all good things must come to an end. Since this site is shutting down, this will be my last entry for this blog.
It's been a lot of fun writing all about Melbourne and about Australian culture, and I hope you've enjoyed reading about it. Maybe you even learnt a few new things!
Thank you to all the readers who wrote to me with questions or comments. I always enjoyed getting your messages, and it was good to hear your responses to what I was writing. Thank you in particular to miniluv, Pin, sachi, yamako, そらのすけ, ku, Naomi, bump, Aurora and Mo-moko for writing to me.
I hope you all get to come to Australia - or even Melbourne! - someday soon. And even if you don't, I hope you travel somewhere else! Remember, there's no point learning a foreign language unless you use it - so make sure you get out there and make the most of it.
Anyway, I do recommend coming to Australia, if you can. It's beautiful, even if the sun gets pretty intense sometimes.
Still, it's always nice under the shade.

On the weekend I went to a reunion of some of my old university classmates. I completed two degrees at university, both arts and science, and this reunion was with the people I studied zoology and botany with.
One of my classmates hosted the reunion at her house, which was nice. You can see her backyard in the photo above. It's probably a pretty average-sized Australian backyard. If you look closely, you can see her vegetable garden in the background.
It was interesting to see what everyone ended up doing. Most people had kept working as scientists or academics, while a few (like me!) had gone into other fields.
Lots of people had had children, and there were babies and kids running around all over the place. In the photo above, some of the adults are playing a parachute game with the kids.
It was fun to catch up with everyone. Hopefully it's not too long before someone organises another get-together.

Some of you might remember that I made three New Year's resolutions at the start of last year, in this entry:

I think it's time to look at how I did, and to make some new resolutions! These are the things I said I would do last year:
Resolution 1: Exercise regularly
I did get some exercise done last year. I tried going for long 90 minute walks, and I've been going for runs with my new housemate. This year I want to try going swimming more often, because I think that's a really good way to get more fit.
Resolution 2: Learn to cook more meals
I completely forgot to do this. Oops! I'd better try again this year.
Resolution 3: Get my driver's license
I've started to get lessons, but I haven't got my license yet. I'll need to finish this off this year.
So, I think I did okay with my resolutions. I completed about half of what I said I wanted to do. Anyway, these are my resolutions this year:
1. Learn to drive
I need to finish what I started!
2. Eat more healthily
I've decided that this year I'm going to try to minimise the amount of sugar, dairy, and wheat that I eat. I'm also not going to drink any beer.
3. Do more creative writing
I do a lot of writing for my work, but I don't do enough story or script writing in my spare time. I'm going to do a lot more this year!
4. Learn to cook more meals
Because I didn't do this last year, I'm going to try again this year.

Last week I went to my dad's beach house to spend some time with him, my step-mother and my step-sister. His beach house is on the coast to the south-west of Melbourne, in a place called Brimlea.
Brimlea is surrounded by a swampy area that has been protected by the government, so no one can build any new buildings here. This means that even in the middle of the holiday season, there is almost no one at the nearby beach. You can see on the photo above that the beach was almost empty while I was there.
My dad and step-mum had the house built about seven years ago. They got it cheap by buying a house built by students studying building. The house was built at the university campus and then carried (in two pieces) to Brimlea on trucks.
It's a very relaxing place to be. I should try to go to the beach house more often this year...

Happy New Year everyone, and welcome to 2008!
I spent my New Year's Eve back in Melbourne, at a barbecue at my friend's house. It was incredibly hot, about 40 degrees Celsius, so everyone was pretty exhausted.
My friend had a children's pool full of ice to keep the drinks in (you can see it in the middle of the photo) and provided barbecued steaks and sausages for dinner. (Since I'm vegetarian, I brought my own vegetarian sausages along to barbecue.)
When it got dark, a few of us climbed up onto the roof to check out the short fireworks show above the city. It only went for about 10 minutes (much shorter than any of the Japanese fireworks I've seen!).
Anyway, I hope you all had a good New Year's Eve. I think 2008 is going to be a pretty good year, and I hope it is for all of you as well!
